The Marine Mammal Rescue Centre is an off-site facility (in Downtown Vancouver) for the rehabilitation of ill, injured, and abandoned marine mammals that have been rescued along the British Columbia coastline.

ROLE SUMMARY*
Reporting to the Assistant Manager and Manager, the Veterinary Technologist is responsible for the collection and transport of marine mammals, food preparation and feeding of animals, following, and implementing treatment protocols established by the DVM, preparation and administration of medication, record keeping, daily maintenance and cleaning of rehabilitation centre. This role assists the Veterinarians with daily routine and non-routine veterinary treatments and procedures, providing emergency care for critical patients, assistance and maintenance of medical equipment, diagnostic imaging, clinical pathology, diagnostic sampling in all areas of animal care and to collect data for any current research being conducted. This role will involve the filing of records, data entry and the routine administrative duties that occur within the department. This role provides training and supervision of volunteers, students, veterinary externs, and education to the public.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES*

Ensuring that day to day rounds are completed and communicated with team; patient observations, follow up, noting any variations and escalating issues;

  • Preforming, under the guidance of DVM, routine veterinary procedures including anaesthesia, surgery, treatment, diagnostics, and necropsies;
  • Providing veterinary care and nutrition of marine mammals, medications, and laboratory procedures, blood collection, physical exams, fluid administration, and wound care;
  • Participating in research programs including collection, processing, and storage of samples;
  • Preparing prescriptions, dispense and administer medication; quality control;
  • Providing education information to the public as required;
  • Assisting in supervision and training of volunteers, practicum students, and other staff members;
  • Providing off-site assessment, and transportation of marine mammals;
  • Assisting in the preparation of animals for release including tagging;
  • Maintaining detailed patient files, administrative records; data entry, reports, phone records etc.;
  • Communicating with the DVM and remote application of medical treatment plans;
  • Maintenance of facility;
  • Maintaining organizational safety standards;
  • Releasing rehabilitated animals.

QUALIFICATIONS*

Education and Experience*

  • Veterinary Technologist or Veterinary Technician Diploma/Degree;
  • Proof of current registration status with local VT Association;
  • Valid Driver’s License required;
  • Previous experience with wildlife or marine mammal species preferred.

Job Type: Part-time
